Zimbra.com Review

Thursday, July 6th, 2006

So my boss was walking along and points out this site to me: Zimbra.com; so naturally I go to take a look at it. Wow, this is a complete office suite almost, all online. The e-mail integration is amazing and it it has an interactive calendar, Zimlets (as they call them), and so much more. The email comes with pre-built search queries which would save a ton of time for someone that uses the same queries over and over.

Tags. How could ANY application go without tags these days. Tags are the latest ‘Beta’ I guess, but either way, I love tags. (I use tags on this site, not gonna lie.) Well, this Collaboration Suite comes in both Enterprise and Open Source edition. Good move for them. Help spread the word by giving it away for free and offer commercial licenses for it as well with added support.

Myspace Sends out C&D Letters

Friday, June 30th, 2006

Myspace Legal has been very busy lately with some cease and desist letters being sent out to few websites. The legal department wasn’t targeting sites that have Myspace resources such as pictures or profile generators, but they were targeting automated script websites which were benefiting purely from the Myspace community. Sites such as SingleStat.us, which was a status report site for users of Myspace. This automated process type website is against the AUP of Myspace for really one reason: it puts a higher amount of stress on the Myspace servers, therefor providing a lower quality service to the actual community.

Myspace saw this as an opportunity to increase server performance and actually follow through with upholding their AUP. This is a good move for Myspace and we should hopefully see even a slightly higher increase in usability on the website. (via)

Microsoft: AdLab Demographics Prediction Tool

Microsoft: Demographics AdLab

Microsoft recently launched a Demographics Prediction tool which will help predict a query or URL’s demographics. This tool will provide predicted demographic data for a specific query or a URL which you will input into the tool. The tool processes those terms and based on, what I’m assuming to be their database of search queries, predicted data for that search or URL. Below is an example of the data.

AdLab: Example Data

This can be a very helpful tool for new sites or sites that do not have the time to gather such data. This tool could also be helpful for setting goals for your target audience. This will hopefully become yet another important tool, such as the Keyword Selector tool by Yahoo! has become an important tool to webmasters.

Yahoo! Search Releases “Site Explorer”

Thursday, June 15th, 2006

Yahoo Search SiteExplorer

A little new release from Yahoo! in attempt to put themselves back in the game for Webmasters.

Why is this search different?

Site Explorer allows you to explore all the web pages indexed by Yahoo! Search. View the most popular pages from any site, dive into a comprehensive site map, and find pages that link to that site or any page.

Site Explorer APIs

Access the Site Explorer in your favorite programming languages through a web services API.

I personally don’t see how this helps all that much. You can basically the do the same thing right now just using the site:domain.com function on the main search page. The only added functionality to the search type is that you can do ‘Explore URL’ which actually doesn’t do much else once you click in. Yahoo! has a good idea behind this, but it needs to be developed a lot more.

Handcrafted SERPs via MSN

Thursday, June 15th, 2006

A nice little quote from search.msn.com that describes the process of the jobs there at MSN. This little insight gives us a better understanding to how MSNbot and all the little gremlines inside of MSNbot, function.

Hand crafted results
When all else fails, and the ranking algorithms do not pass the confidence threshold, we fall back to delivering handcrafted results. Working on a team of approximately 132 other handcrafters in 26 worldwide markets, you will receive a user query, use all the available search engines to quickly scour the web for results, pick the top 10 results for this query, and send it on to the user. Successful handcrafters can typically find top 10 results for a real-time user’s query in less than 3.8 seconds. This is an opportunity to truly connect with customers, because the queries that get routed to you are precisely the ones that the engine cannot answer well. We will have adequate staffing to allow generous coffee and bathroom breaks.

If you are an expert at using at least 3 different search engines, well versed with American English/colloquial usage, and can type at > 149 words/minute as measured by the Simia-Lico method – come join us and delight users real-time!

Wordpress More Popular Than Blogger? Movable Type?

Thursday, May 11th, 2006

According to the latest release of Google — Google Trends — Wordpress is more popular than other CMS platforms such as Blogger (powered by Google) or even Movable Type (powered by Six Apart).

Platform Trend

I have been a strong supporter of Wordpress for the past 2 years, so I’m happy to see where it’s come and where it’s going. I’m also happy to see that it hasn’t been gobbled up like other projects or platforms such as the competitors have been. As a last note, if you look closely at the graph above, you will see that Wordpress — at one point — was in last place for most popular searches. Where does it rank now? First, out of those three.

Wednesday, May 10th, 2006

Google has an anual Press Day, which means they release information about a bunch of new products and there was a small Q&A session according to Matt Cutts.

Here’s a little bit from the Q&A session:

Q: How do you measure the quality of your searches internally?
A: Heh. No way is Alan going to answer that. We put a ton of effort into that. Yup, he regretfully declines.

Q: Delivering clicks to the right people important; how do you handle click fraud?
A: Click fraud is something that Google monitors for carefully. It’s a big focus for us as one of many things that we pay attention to, because Return on Investment

Q: Plans for click-to-call?
A: We will pay attention to that, and all ways to help users and advertisers.

Facebook.com Buyout? No, Just Venture Capital.

Wednesday, April 19th, 2006

FaceBook.com, a college and high-school based student directory, recently turned down a $750 million buyout from Viacom Inc.

The owners of the privately held company have turned down a $750 million offer and hope to fetch as much as $2 billion in a sale, senior industry executives familiar with the matter say. BusinessWeek.com

With plans to seek further development of the site, Greylock Partners has granted Facebook (powered by Mark Zuckerberg) a $25 million venture capital. Greylock Partners is a Palo Alto-based company, states simply

“We’re building this company for the long term and this funding validates the viability of our business,” said Mark Zuckerberg, Founder and CEO. “We’re still in the early stages of building Facebook. We’re constantly developing new functionality to make Facebook more useful and this funding will help accelerate our development efforts.” Greylock.com

In the short, Facebook has been having a lot of new developments and they have really picked up their member size in the last year or so. I have been a strong supporter of Facebook since the day they opened and was happy when they finally came to my school. As an active user of Facebook, I am quite happy to see this further development in the application platform so that there is more functionality within the site. As I have seen the site grow, mature, change, and evolve, I have great expectations for Facebook in the future.
